EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Casey Allbright scored from eight yards out as Indiana State clipped Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer 2-1 in overtime.
It was the second straight home game that the Cougars were defeated in overtime after dropping one to Northern Illinois last week. SIUE has now lost four of five games by one goal, including three in a row.
Indiana State collected the game winner when Allbright took a pass from Kaitlin Owens and scored with a low shot toward the left side of the goal 2:25 into the overtime period.
SIUE fell to 0-5 with the loss while Indiana State improved to 2-5-1.
SIUE coach Derek Burton said his team played a complete game, but just didn't get the desired result.
"If we keep playing hard, we will be on the other side of games like this. We will get the result," said Burton.
The Cougars held the lead early when Chelsey Johnston scored her second goal of the season at 14:46. Johnston rushed the goal and scored from 10 yards out after a pass from Correen Roark.
"I was proud of the way we came out to start the game," said Burton. SIUE held a 10-4 shot advantage by halftime.
Indiana State would equal the score at 26:12 when Erin Bianchi emerged from the crowd around the goal and flicked the ball in the goal from five yards out. Allbright was credited with an assist on the goal.
SIUE controlled the tempo of the game as it outshot the Sycamores 17-10. The Cougars found themselves a player down with just four seconds left in regulation when Correen Roark was given a red card near Indiana's State goal.
Indiana State goalkeeper Emily Lahay finished with four saves while SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck finished with three.
