JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - East Tennessee State used a pair of eight-run innings Friday to defeat the SIUE Cougars 24-4 in the rain-shortened opener of a three-game baseball series.
ETSU, 9-2, sent 12 hitters to the plate in the first inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits off Cougars' starter Luke Vine. The Buccaneers added two more runs in the second to go up 10-0 before SIUE got get on the board for the first time.
Adam Eggemeyer and Mitch Matecki each picked up run-scoring singles in a two-run Cougar third.
ETSU got a run to open the third and chase Vine from the game. Vine allowed 11 runs in two innings. He walked two and struck out one.
The Cougars, 2-11, added two more runs in the fourth. Matt Highland drove in a run with a single and Eggemeyer added his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.
Eggemeyer was 1 for 1 with the single, the sac fly and a walk. Matecki was 1 for 2. Highland was 2 for 4 with the RBI and a run scored.
ETSU scored four times in the fourth and another eight times in the fifth. The Bucs added a single run in the sixth for the final margin.
Luke Ingersoll and Jake Stauffenberg each appeared out of the bullpen for the Cougars.
The Cougars continue the three-game series with East Tennessee State Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 pm CT.
