JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Senior Adam Eggemeyer hit for the cycle Sunday afternoon, finishing 5 for 5 with three RBIs to lead the SIUE Cougars baseball team to a 16-10 win over host East Tennessee State University in the finale of a three-game series.
It was also the finale of a nine-game, 11-day road trip for the team. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for SIUE.
Eggemeyer capped the day with a ninth-inning single off ETSU shortstop Garrett May's glove. Eggemeyer doubled and tripled in his first two at-bats in the first and third innings. He walked in the fifth before doubling again in the sixth. He hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the seventh.
SIUE, 3-12, had its offense working Sunday, banging out a season-high 21 hits. The Cougars hit four home runs.
Trailing, 4-0 after an inning, Thad Hawkins got the Cougars on the board with his first home run, a three-run shot to cut the ETSU lead to one.
Thad Hawkins finished the day 2-6 with the three RBIs.
The Cougars took their first lead of the series thanks to a four-run fifth inning.
James Vazquez started the scoring with his first collegiate homer, a one-out solo home run. Freshman Joel Greatting capped the inning with his first home run as a Cougar, a three-run shot, to put SIUE on top 8-6. The Cougars wouldn't relinquish the lead.
Vazquez finished 2-6. Greatting was 2-5. Matt Highland was 3-6 with a pair of RBIs. Mitch Matecki was 3-6. Zach Hawkins and Travis Becherer each added RBIs for the Cougars in the win.
Freshman Tony Schaeffer started for the Cougars and allowed seven runs over four-plus innings. He struck out three.
Sophomore Josh Hoguet, 1-1, earned the win with 4.2 innings of relief work. Hoguet entered in the fifth with the bases loaded and nobody out and the Cougars leading 8-6. He got a double-play ball and a strikeout to preserve the lead. He struck out five for the day. Dustin Quattrochi retired the last hitter of the afternoon to close it out.
ETSU dropped to 10-3 with the loss.
SIUE opens the home season Tuesday afternoon at SimmonsCooper Complex against the University of North Dakota. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
