EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Three Cougar pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout Tuesday as the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team opened the 2010 home season with an 11-0 rout of the University of North Dakota at SimmonsCooper Complex.
"We played like a solid team today," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "It was good to have a win for a home-opener."
Dustin Quattrocchi, 2-3, earned the win tossing six scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six. Brian Lorenz tossed two scoreless innings, striking out two. Josh Malin pitched a perfect ninth.
"Quattrocchi and Lorenz pitched well today and threw strikes," Collins added. For the second straight game the Cougars had a potent offensive attack. After 21 hits on Sunday, SIUE banged out 19 in the win Tuesday afternoon.
Brett Keeler was 5 for 5 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Keeler opened the scoring for the Cougars, driving in Thad Hawkins with the game's first run in the fourth inning.
SIUE used a four-run fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-0.
James Vazquez was 5 for 6 with a double and a triple. Vazquez drove in three. He finished a home run short of the cycle. Thad Hawkins was 4 for 5 with an RBI and four runs scored. Zach Hawkins added two hits and an RBI. Joel Greatting added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Brandon Baumgartner suffered the loss for North Dakota, which fell to 1-5 with the loss.
The Cougars and Fighting Sioux play the second game of the series Wednesday at SimmonsCooper Complex. Game time is 3 pm.
