EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Evansville scored a run in the ninth inning and another in the 10th Friday night to score a come-from-behind 3-2 win Friday night at the University of Evansville's Braun Stadium.
Trent Copeland ended the night with a two-out single to score Greg Wallace who had tripled two batters earlier. The final margin of 3-2 was the only lead of the night for the Purple Aces, 8-11.
The two teams will finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
Brian Lorenz, 1-1, suffered the loss in relief. Lorenz allowed a run in one inning. Lorenz followed Mitchell Fairley, who turned in an outstanding start. The junior allowed two runs over 8.1 innings. He allowed six hits and struck out a career-high 12 hitters.
Brett Keeler opened the scoring in the second inning. Keeler singled to drive home Dustin Brooks from second base. Brooks had singled earlier in the inning and advanced to second on a balk. Keeler finished the game with three hits.
The Purple Aces evened the score in the bottom of the fourth when third baseman Cody Fick connected on his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot to left.
SIUE, 5-13, regained the lead in the eighth. Mitch Matecki led off the inning with a double then went to third on a passed ball. With one out and the infield drawn in, Michael Hopkins hit a bouncing ball to second. Aces' second baseman Trent Copeland threw home to get Matecki trying to score. Travis Becherer went to first to run for Hopkins. Brooks then drove a double to the gap in left center to score Becherer from first and put the Cougars back in the lead.
Brooks was 2 for 4 with the RBI. Matecki finished 3 for 5.
Evansville tied the game in the bottom of the ninth thanks to three singles. Fairley allowed all three hits in the inning.
Originally the two teams were to finish the series with single games Saturday and Sunday, but the Cougars and Aces rearranged the weekend schedule to include the doubleheader Saturday because of weather concerns on Sunday. They will not play a game on Sunday.
