EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - UT Martin took the final contest of the three-game weekend series against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with an 11-7 victory Sunday at SimmonsCooper Complex.

SIUE baseball dropped to 8-22 with the loss while UT Martin moved to 15-16 overall. The Cougars have a busy week ahead with five games this week at SimmonsCooper Complex. It begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday with the first of three games this season against Saint Louis University.

The Cougars also face Missouri-St. Louis Thursday at 7 p.m. A three-game weekend series with future Ohio Valley Conference rival begins with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.

On Sunday, the Cougars were knocked around for 19 hits by the Skyhawks. The top three hitters in the UT Martin lineup - Trey Karlen, Cody Terry and Ty Nelson each finished with three hits. Designated hitter Drew Mason also collected three hits for UT Martin.

SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said the Cougars pitchers, six in all on Sunday, threw too many pitches and got into hitter's counts.

"We got off to a bad start and couldn't turn it around," said Collins. "We gave up too many runs early."

SIUE fell behind 10-2 in the sixth when UT Martin rallied for four runs. Wes Patterson highlighted the inning with a three-run double.

The Cougars didn't back down. SIUE attacked UT Martin for five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Highland started a string of three straight hits. He was followed by Brett Keeler and Ryan Wiggs, who was pinch-hitting. Highland scored on Wiggs' base hit to right field.

Keeler would score when Adam Eggemeyer grounded into a double play.

Mitch Matecki restarted the rally with a walk. He stole second and then Brooks was hit by a pitch from starter-winner Coty Green, who was lifted in favor of Matt Haynes. Joel Greatting would jump on Haynes for a double down the left-field line, scoring Matecki.

Thad Hawkins put the Cougars within three runs with a two-run single to right.

Drew Flaniken closed out the game for UT Martin with two scoreless innings.

Mitchell Fairley suffered the loss for the Cougars. He gave up four runs over the first 2 2/3 innings and fell to 0-4 for the season.
