EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE baseball collected 17 hits and took advantage of six Saint Louis errors as the Cougars downed the Billikens 17-10 at SimmonsCooper Complex.
The 3 1/2-hour contest quickly became a slugfest as both teams finished with 17 hits.
SIUE, 9-22, put up the biggest number of the night, an eight-run second inning. The Cougars used three Billiken errors in the second to score four earned runs and four unearned runs. Michael Hopkins' three-run home run was the highlight of the inning.
Errors became even more of a headache for Saint Louis with four more unearned runs in the fourth inning and one more unearned tally in the sixth.
Hopkins ended the string of nine unearned runs in the seventh with an RBI double. Adam Eggemeyer later added a two-run homer in the seventh, his team-leading eighth of the season.
Saint Louis, which scored in each of the first seven innings, wasn't without offensive power. Jon Meyers blasted three home runs on the night to boost his season total to 13. He finished with five RBIs.
Seven different Cougars recorded multiple-hit nights. That included three each from Eggemeyer, Hopkins and Zach Hawkins.
Tony Schaeffer collected his first collegiate win with four-plus innings of relief work. SLU starter Andrew Buckham, the first of six pitchers, took the loss.
SIUE returns to SimmonsCooper Complex Thursday night for another home contest. This time the Cougars entertain Missouri-St. Louis. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
