EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.-- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball picked up its second straight win, and the third in four games, Thursday night defeating Missouri-St. Louis 7-3 at SimmonsCooper Complex.
Sophomore Josh Hoguet, 2-1, tossed seven shutout innings for the win. The right-hander allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high seven hitters. Kyle Dodson tossed one inning of scoreless relief for the Cougars.
"He seems like he pitches better when he starts," noted SIUE Coach Gary Collins.
SIUE, 10-22, got on the board with one swing of the bat in the first inning. After consecutive one-out hits by Adam Eggemeyer and Mitch Matecki, Dustin Brooks connected for his fourth home run of the year to make it 3-0 Cougars.
The Cougars went up 7-0 with a four-run fifth inning. SIUE banged out five hits in the inning, including three straight two-out hits. Matecki, Brooks , Joel Greatting and Thad Hawkins all had RBIs in the inning.
Brooks finished the night 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs. Matecki was 2 for 4 with the RBI and two runs. Greatting, who extended his hitting streak to a team-leading 11 games, and Thad Hawkins each finished 1 for 4 with an RBI each. Brett Lancaster was 2 for 4.
"Brooks jumps up and hits that three-run homer and we're off and running," said Collins.
Matt Highland and Adam Eggemeyer each added hits for SIUE, which finished with 10 hits.
UMSL, 10-28, scored three times in the ninth inning thanks to a pair of Cougar errors.
The Cougars are back in action this coming weekend when Ohio Valley Conference foe Murray State comes to SimmonsCooper Complex. The Cougars and `Breds will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 pm.
