EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Murray State collected 16 hits and used an early lead to push past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 11-6 at SimmonsCooper Complex.
SIUE dropped the final game of the three-game series against the Breds, which idly moved to first place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. Murray State salvaged its series with the Sunday win, breaking a four-game losing skid.
The Cougars, 12-23, had their four-game winning streak snapped.
The Breds, 19-17, scored six runs in the first three innings off SIUE starter Mitchell Fairley. The two runs in the first inning were due to an outfield error and a run scoring off a double play.
SIUE, which recorded 13 hits against the Breds, was down 8-2 after a two-run homer by Bryan Propst in the sixth.
The Cougars would rally for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Zach Hawkins and Thad Hawkins each singled to right center to lead off the inning. After two fly outs, James Vazquez was hit by a pitch. Adam Eggemeyer then singled home two runs. Vazquez would score on an error by Murray State shortstop Brandon Elliott.
Love improved to 5-0 despite giving up five runs on 10 hits over six innings. Fairley took the loss for the Cougars and is now 0-5.
SIUE batters kept hitting streaks alive. Joel Greatting collected three hits and now has hit safely in a team-high 13 games. Dustin Brooks holds a 12-game hitting streak while Matt Highland has an 11-game hit streak.
The Cougars are now idle until Wednesday when they travel to Springfield, Mo., for a 6:30 p.m. single game against the Bears.
