MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State rallied for eight runs in the seventh and tripped up Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 11-6 in the opening game of a three-game series.
The future Ohio Valley Conference rivals will play two more games in the 2010 series. Saturday's game is set for 1 p.m. ET. Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for noon ET.
SIUE, now 7-17 overall, grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Joel Greatting delivered a home run to right center. Dustin Brooks, who walked, and Zach Hawkins, who reached base on a double, scored on Greatting's homer. It was Greatting's second home run of the season.
Morehead State, 15-14, tied the score 3-3 in the fifth on a two-run double by Drew Lee.
The Cougars retook the lead in the top of the seventh with two runs. Adam Eggemeyer drove in Brett Keeler with a single while James Vazquez scored on the same play on Morehead erred while trying to throw Vazquez out at third.
Morehead State took command in the after seventh-inning stretch, rallying for eight runs. Lee hit a three-run home run and Andrew Deeds added a two-run homer to highlight the inning.
Brian Lorenz, 2-2, took the loss for the Cougars in relief of Dustin Quattrocchi. Michael Bottoms picked up the win for Morehead State.
