CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay swept a doubleheader from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in baseball from Raymond C. Hand Park. APSU took game one 5-2 before winning the nightcap 6-5. Both games were seven innings.
SIUE, 12-26, nearly tied the second game against Govs' closer Zach Gerler in the top of the seventh inning. Trailing 6-4 going into the inning, James Vazquez walked with two outs. Vaquez advanced to second on fielder's indifference. Mitch Matecki followed with a line drive to right to score Vazquez and make it 6-5. Matecki advanced to second on a passed ball. Joel Greatting followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Matecki tried to score from second, but APSU Left fielder Adam Browett unleashed a strong throw and Matecki was called out for the final out of the game.
Matecki finished the game 2 for 4 with an RBI.
The Governors, 21-18, used a four-run second inning in the nightcap to open the scoring. Govs' third baseman Chris Lewellyn and center fielder Daniel Baggett hit back-to-back home runs in the inning.
SIUE got a two-run double from Greatting in the third inning and an RBI groundout by Michael Hopkins in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. Greatting finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Austin Peay went up 6-3 after shortstop Reed Harper's two-run double in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cougars chipped away, scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to get within two. Michael Hopkins picked up an RBI on a groundout in the fourth. Zach Hawkins singled to drive in a run in the sixth inning.
Dustin Quattrocchi, 4-4, suffered the loss for the Cougars. The left-hander fired his second consecutive complete game. He allowed the six runs on seven hits. Quattrocchi struck out two.
In game one, Austin Peay got on the board in the second inning on back-to-back two out hits. Govs' left fielder Cody Hudson picked up the RBI with a single. Matt Kole led off the fourth with a home run to put APSU on top 2-0.
The Governors took advantage of four walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the sixth to add three insurance runs. Cougar starter Josh Malin walked two and hit the batter to load the bases with one out before being lifted for Mitchell Fairley. Fairley gave up a hit, a sacrifice fly and walked two hitters in the inning.
Malin, 1-4, suffered the loss for the Cougars. He allowed all five runs, four earned, on five hits.
The Cougars managed two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Greatting doubled with two outs before scoring on a single by Matecki. Matecki went to second on a balk by APSU starter Ricky Marshall. Zach Hawkins then singled to drive home Matecki.
Matecki finished game one 2 for 3 with the RBI. He was the only Cougar with more than a single hit. Zach Hawkins was 1 for 2 with a walk and the RBI.
SIUE managed six hits in the opener but grounded into four double-plays during the game.
The Cougars travel to Terre Haute, Ind., Tuesday for a 5 pm CT game against Indiana State.
