ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis collected 17 hits Wednesday and defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 11-4 in college baseball action at the Billiken Sports Center.
SIUE, 12-28, took the early lead when James Vazquez drew a game-opening walk off starter Jerry Mancuso. Vazquez would move to third on an infield error off the bat of Adam Eggemeyer. Vazquez would score on a wild pitch.
The Billikens, which moved to the .500 mark at 21-21, took their first lead in the bottom of the first inning. Steve Fernandez and Zach Miller provided RBIs for SLU.
SIUE regained the lead 3-2 in the fourth as Thad Hawkins tripled home Zach Hawkins. Thad Hawkins would score on an infield out by Matt Highland, who would finish the game with a team-leading two RBIs.
SLU rebounded in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Mike Levine. The Billikens would take the lead for good in the fifth behind a three-run rally. Two walks and a double by Danny Brock would be enough for SIUE to lift starter Tony Schaeefer.
The Cougars managed just four hits against five Saint Louis pitchers. The pre-arranged rotation gave Mancuso, who pitched three innings, the win as he improved to 5-4.
SIUE now heads to Carbondale for three games in three days. The first game of the series with the Salukis is Friday with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
