COLUMBIA, Mo.-- The Missouri Tigers used a pair of big innings Tuesday night to defeat the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars baseball team 14-3 at Missouri's Taylor Stadium.
SIUE, 7-20, struck first Tuesday night when Dustin Brooks homered on the first pitch of the second inning to put the Cougars up 1-0.
Missouri, 16-11, answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-1. The Tigers never trailed again.
The Cougars got within a run in the top of the third. Matt Highland singled to lead off the inning. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Lancaster, Highland scored on a single by James Vazquez to make it 3-2.
The Tigers scored four times on four hits in the third inning to extend 7-2. The four-run third chased Cougar starter Tony Schaeffer, 0-3. Schaeffer allowed the seven runs, six earned, on six hits. He struck out one.
Missouri scored twice more in the fourth and five times in the sixth for the final. Brooks finished the night 2 for 3 with the homer, his third of the year. Vazquez was the only other Cougar with more than a single hit. He was 3 for 4 with the RBI and a run scored.
The Cougars are back in action this coming weekend when Ohio Valley Conference foe UT Martin comes to SimmonsCooper Complex. The Cougars and Skyhawks will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 pm.
