CARBONDALE, Ill. - Blake Pinnon's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted Southern Illinois University Carbondale to a 4-2 win over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at Abe Martin Field on the SIUC Campus.
The Cougars put the tying runs on base in the ninth but stranded both runners.
SIUE, 12-30, took a first-inning lead on a double off the left field wall by Dustin Brooks. Brooks, who missed a home run by a few feet, drove in Adam Eggemeyer, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
After the Salukis tied the game in the bottom of the inning, the Cougars went back on top in the second.
Thad Hawkins led off the inning with a single. Mike Hurt then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Hawkins was able to go from first to third on the bunt when Saluki third baseman Austin Montgomery charged, leaving the base open. James Vazquez then lifted a fly ball to center field to score Hawkins on the sacrifice fly.
SIUC, 21-22, tied the game with a run in the fifth to even the score 2-2.
The Cougars managed just six hits against Salukis starter Randy Hoelscher. Hoelscher tossed 8 1/3 innings, allowing both runs on six hits. He struck out three. Bryan George finished the ninth to earn the save for SIUC.
Thad Hawkins had a pair of hits and a run scored for the Cougars. Vazquez and Brooks each had a hit and an RBI. Brett Keeler and Zach Hawkins each had single hits for the Cougars.
Dustin Quattrocchi, 4-5, went seven innings for the Cougars. He allowed all four runs, three earned, on eight hits. He fanned a season-high eight Saluki hitters.
The Cougars and Salukis wrap the three-game series with a 1 pm game Sunday in Carbondale.
