EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Three errors led to a six-run rally for Indiana State as the Sycamores downed Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 7-5 Tuesday night at SimmonsCooper Complex.
Indiana State improved to 31-15 with their second win of the season against the Cougars, 14-34. The two teams will play once more Saturday in a neutral-site game at Charleston.
The Cougars now turn their attention to Saint Louis University for a single game Wednesday. The 7 p.m. game will be played at GCS Ballpark in Sauget.
Indiana State collected seven runs in the first two innings, all off SIUE starter Tony Schaeffer.
Luke Ingersoll came into the game in the second inning for the Cougars and proceeded to shut down the Sycamores for the next six innings. He did not allow a run and gave up just two hits while striking out three batters. Kyle Dodson also was highly effective out of the bullpen with six strikeouts in his two innings of work.
"They were both outstanding. That shows me they have that in them, and they will be back next year," said SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins.
Ryan Strausborger led the Sycamores with two runs , two hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases. He started Indiana State's scoring with a single in the first. He stole second and was driven home with a single by Kyle Burnam.
The six-run second inning gave Indiana State starter Blake Drake all the runs he needed. Strausborger blasted the biggest hit of the inning, a two-RBI double to left center. But three infield errors coupled with ISU's three hits gave the Sycamores a 7-0 lead.
SIUE would get its first run in the third inning. With the bases loaded Dustin Brooks grounded to the third baseman, who started what would have been a double play but Brooks reached the base before the throw. Travis Becherer scored on the groundout, but James Vazquez was thrown out at the plate trying to get an extra base out of the play.
Brooks collected four hits for the second straight game. "He has been golden. He just keeps us going," said Collins.
The Cougars pulled within three in the eighth inning. Mitch Matecki walked. Brooks followed with a single. Adam Eggemeyer doubled down the line as the ISU right fielder Levi Ferguson lost the ball in the lights. That scored Matecki and put runners at second and third.
Joel Greatting would ground out but drive home Brooks. Brett Keeler then singled home Eggemeyer.
The Cougars scored once more in the ninth with three straight singles from Matcki, Brooks and Eggemeyer. ISU reliever Tyler Downing would strand two SIUE runners on base to collect his Missouri Valley Conference-leading 10th save.
