May 2, 2010

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale came back Sunday for an 8-5 win over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at Abe Martin Field.

The Salukis swept the three-game series from Cougars. SIUE, 12-31, has dropped nine straight decisions.

For the second day in a row, it was the Cougars who struck first. Dustin Brooks and Joel Greatting both walked with two outs in the first inning. Mitch Matecki followed with an infield hit to load the bases. Zach Hawkins followed with a two-run single to center to put the Cougars up 2-0.

Zach Hawkins finished 1 for 4 with the two RBIs. The first inning single extended Hawkins' hitting streak to 11 games.

Matt Highland made it 3-0 Cougars in the top of the fourth. Highland grounded into a fielder's choice to score Matecki, who had walked to start the inning.

SIUC, 22-22, took their first lead with a four-run fourth inning. The lead, however, was short-lived for the Salukis.

SIUE scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to get back on top 5-4. Vazquez walked to start the inning then scored on a double by Adam Eggemeyer. Eggemeyer went to third on a wild pitch then scored on an errant throw by Saluki catcher Tyler Bullock.

Eggemeyer was 2 for 5 for the game with an RBI. Matecki was 2 for 3.

The Salukis rallied for three runs in the sixth to go back on top for good 7-5. Bullock capped the inning with a two-run homer off of SIUE reliever Mitchell Fairley. Jordan Sivertsen added a solo home run in the seventh for the final margin.

Fairley, 0-6, suffered the loss in relief. He allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief work.

The Cougars are off for finals week at SIUE. They travel to Peoria for a Saturday doubleheader with Bradley. First pitch Saturday is 11 a.m.
