PEORIA, Ill. - Bradley University swept a baseball doubleheader from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday, winning 7-1 and 3-2 at O'Brien Field.
SIUE, 12-33, has now dropped 11 consecutive games.
The two teams will continue the series with a doubleheader Sunday at SimmonsCooper Complex. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. and can be heard on WSIE FM 88.7.
SIUE led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh of game two before Bradley loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. Braves catcher Kevin Sullivan came to the plate with two outs and singled through the middle to drive home a pair of runs. Cougar center fielder Adam Eggemeyer then threw wildly to third, allowing the winning run to score for Bradley.
Josh Malin, 1-6, was saddled with the loss. Malin tossed the first complete game of his Cougar career. He struck out four.
SIUE scored both of its runs in the third inning. Matt Highland and Eggemeyer both had hits in the inning. Eggemeyer drove in Highland with a double. Eggemeyer scored the second run when Mitch Matecki reached on a two-out error.
Eggemeyer finished 2 for 3 with the RBI.
Bradley starter Patrick Cooper, 4-3, tossed a complete game for the Braves. Cooper retired 12 of the final 13 hitters he faced and did not allow a Cougar hit after the third inning.
Bradley, 17-25, got out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in game one. Braves leadoff hitter Matt Fritz walked to start the first and then scored on a one-out hit.
Bradley left fielder Mike Tauchman led off the second inning with his fourth homer of the year to make it 2-0. Fritz tripled with two outs in the inning then scored on a double by Rob Elliott for the 3-0 lead.
The Braves scored a single run in the fifth and then three more in the sixth to go up 7-0.
SIUE got its only run in the seventh. Michael Hopkins, Highland and Brett Keeler each singled with one out to load the bases. Pinch-hitting Thad Hawkins followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in the lone run of the game for the Cougars.
Hopkins and Keeler each had a pair of hits in the loss for the Cougars.
Dustin Quattrocchi, 4-6, took the loss despite his third complete game of the year. All seven runs were earned against Quattrocchi, who struck out seven in the loss.
Bradley left-hander Joe Bircher, 4-4, also tossed a complete game.
