MACOMB, Ill.- Claire Lovercheck posted her fourth shutout of the season and the SIUE women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season as the Cougars played to a 0-0 double overtime tie at Western Illinois Friday.
SIUE moved to 4-0-1 to start the season. Western Illinois moved to 1-3-2. The scoreless tie was the first for a Cougar team since Oct. 15, 2006 against Grand Valley State.
"It was a fairly even game," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "A tie is probably a fair result for a game like this. Both teams had chances."
Lovercheck now has a goals against average of 0.57 for the season and a save percentage of .903.
"Claire made some unbelievable saves," Burton said. "She is playing really well."
Burton said he also liked the effort defensively from the entire team.
"We were a lot tougher defensively, and not just the back four," Burton said. "We didn't give up a lot of chances. The chances we did give up, Claire got to."
The Cougars outshot the Leathernecks 17-16 for the entire game, but Western held a 3-2 shot advantage in overtime.
"I wish we could have converted on a chance or two," Burton said.
SIUE will look to remain unbeaten on the year when they host Ohio Valley conference foe Murray State Sunday at Korte Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
"We'll continue to build as we prepare for a tough game against a tough opponent in Murray," Burton said.
