Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer Cougars had the momentum and outshot IUPUI 19-8 Sunday but dropped a 2-1 decision at Korte Stadium.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dropped to 2-4 overall while IUPUI evened its record at 3-3.
The two halves were very different for the Cougars. SIUE was outshot 7-3 in the first half but fired 16 shots to IUPUI's one in the second half.
"I thought we made a good adjustment at halftime and were able to play more in their half of the field," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish.
IUPUI led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from 10 yards out by Jeff Keyler. Tyler Fritcha provided the entry pass to Keyler, who scored on backup SIUE goalkeeper Nick Collico. SIUE's starting goalkeeper Scott Meyer left the game in the 20th minute after colliding with an IUPUI player trying to score from 15 yards out. "We never got any momentum and overall the first half was disappointing," said Kalish.
SIUE's Randy Roy scored his second goal of the season with the equalizer at 68:22. He connected from six yards out on a long entry pass from Nash Maduekwe.
The Cougars continued to pepper IUPUI goalkeeper Tyler Keever with shots from all angles in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net again. Keever finished with nine saves.
Kyle Hyland would produce the game-winning goal at 82:05 when he sent a blistering left-footed shot from the left side toward the right side of the goal. An attempt to clear the ball from the goal area by an SIUE defender missed as the ball hit the back of the net.
Roy led SIUE with four shots. Peter Kelly added three.
"It's just a matter of consistency and seeing if we can become more consistent in our performances and effort," said Kalish.
SIUE now looks forward to its home tournament - the SIUE Men's Soccer Classic. SIUE entertains Dayton next Friday and Memphis next Sunday.
