EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Sydney Winslow became the seventh player in school history to record 1,000 career kills Tuesday with a 17-kill match as SIUE rolled past Chicago State 25-12, 25-12, 25-17.
SIUE won its fourth straight match with a victory over the visiting Chicago State at the Vadalabene Center.
Winslow was clearly the leader for SIUE with her quest for 1,000 kills at the forefront. Her 17 kills led all players and was one more than Chicago State had as a team.
"I owe it all to my teammates," said Winslow. "The defense kept getting the ball up, and Sammi (Minton) kept giving me sets.
Winslow said she was pleased that her family was able to see her achieve 1,000 kills at home. But she didn't see 1,000 kills as an individual achievement. "I give it to my team also. It's not just my award. It's my team's as well."
SIUE Coach Todd Gober said he was pleased with SIUE's execution of the game plan.
"Our setter did a great job feeding Sydney the ball. It was a great performance from her," said Gober. "We did a good job of controlling the tempo and keeping the pace."
SIUE hit .440 for the match, a season best. Minton recorded a pair of kills to add to her 34 assists and spread the ball around as 11 different players recorded at least one kill.
Gober said the four-match winning streak and a homecourt victory were welcomed by the team.
"I felt that in the past we were playing with a bit of nerves, wanting to play so hard and do so well in front of our home crowd. And that was working against us," said Gober.
Chicago State, 0-15, hit -.039 for the match. Anna Morgan led Chicago State, also nicknamed the Cougars, with four kills.
SIUE now travels to Ohio Valley Conference rivals UT Martin Friday and Murray State Saturday.
