CONWAY, Ark.- Freshman forward Meagan Iffrig netted three goals in just over five minutes Sunday afternoon to lead SIUE to a 3-0 win over Central Arkansas in women's soccer.
"Meagan did her job which is to finish," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said of Iffrig.
The Cougars, 6-2-1, outshot the Bears, 4-4-1, 6-3 in the first half but the game was scoreless after 45 minutes.
Iffrig's first goal came six minutes into the second half. Kristen Dailey took the initial shot, which was saved by UCA goalkeeper Kelsey Gochnauer. Iffrig collected the rebound and scored from six yards away.
Less than a minute later, Iffrig found the back of the net again, scoring an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 SIUE.
Dailey and Iffrig hooked up again seconds later when Dailey found Iffrig with a crossing pass. Iffrig converted for the 3-0 final.
"Meagan was productive as far as getting to the right spots," Burton said. "The rest of the team, whether it was Kristin Dierker or Kristen Dailey did a great job finding her."
Iffrig leads the Cougars in scoring with four goals for eight points.
Claire Lovercheck and Sarah Schuchard combined for SIUE's sixth shutout of the year. Lovercheck played the first 82 minutes of the match and made a pair of saves.
Burton credited the entire team for the win.
"This was another team effort today," he said. "As a team we stuck to the game plan which was to posses and keep the ball."
"The credit goes to the girls," Burton continued. "They had the mentality to bounce back (from last weekend) and perform the way we needed."
The Cougars host Eastern Illinois Friday at Korte Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
