EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville collected its third straight win to start the 2010 season Friday with a 2-0 victory over Ball State at Korte Stadium.
SIUE will look to make it four in a row with its first road contest of the regular season. The Cougars travel to Ft. Wayne, Ind., Sunday to take on IPFW in a 1 p.m. ET contest.
SIUE Coach Derek Burton was pleased that his offense came through again Friday.
"Our offense is coming from a lot of different sources. We've had five goals so far this season in three games and five different goal scorers," said Burton.
SIUE's Kaci Harkey broke the early deadlock with her first goal of the season at 23:50. After Hope Jones forced Ball State goalkeeper Layne Schramm to make a save, the rebound came to Sarah Doggendorf who tapped it over to Harkey. From 10 yards out, Harkey scored her first career goal.
"Two goals tonight came from girls who got their first career goals, and that's also very positive and a great step for the girls," said Burton.
The other goal came at 59:27 when Doggendorf tapped in a shot from three yards out among a crowd of players. Kourtney Price and Harkey provided quick passes on the goal.
Claire Lovercheck recorded her third straight shutout in goal for the Cougars. She recorded eight saves.
"We've gone three games without giving up a goal, and we told the girls early on in preseason that if we can keep the ball out of our net we would have a chance every game," Burton said.
The game was physical for both teams with SIUE being called for 18 fouls. Burton said he was pleased with SIUE's poise.
"In an emotional game that turned physical at times, we kept our heads for the most part and played the way we wanted to play, and I'm proud of them," said Burton.
Paige Stroinski led Ball State with five shots. Ball State outshot the Cougars 15-14. Meagan Iffrig was tops for SIUE with three shots.
