SIUE Tops IPFW For Fourth Straight Win

Box Score

FT. WAYNE, Ind. - Kristen Dailey scored twice, including the game winner, as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer upended IPFW 4-3 for its fourth straight victory to open the 2010 season.

SIUE, 4-0, outlasted IPFW in what was a hard-fought game for both teams. Referees handed out seven yellow cards in the contest that was filled with scoring opportunities.

"It was a super physical game. There was a lot of emotion," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. With a back and forth score, there were plenty of ups and downs for both teams.

Dailey scored her game winner at 83:54 off a header past IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden. The play was set up on a corner kick taken by SIUE sophomore back Jenny Humphrey.

"We did well to earn the corner kick," said Burton. "It was a great ball from Jenny. Her kick was right there on the spot."

The Cougars and the Mastodons kept the offensive pressure up all game. IPFW, now 1-4, took the lead at 16:16 when Lisa Underwood scored on a header from six yards out.

Burton said IPFW forwards Underwood and Arianne Mason were a handful. Their play and IPFW's pace kept the Cougars from fully playing their game. "The credit goes to IPFW (for the pace). They played really well and hard," said Burton.

The Cougars, however, would hold a lead as the team's headed into the locker room at halftime. Ashley Davidson scored her first career goal from six yards out at 22:33. Dailey scored her first goal of the game to put SIUE up 2-1. Dailey took a cross from Brittany Bodziak and redirected the ball into goal at 32:49 as she slid near the goal.

"It was a great play all the way," said Burton. "It was a great buildup to the goal."

Underwood would score her second goal of the game five minutes into the second half on a penalty kick. That evened the score at 2-2.

Kaci Harkey helped the Cougars regain the lead at 55:18 by scoring her second goal in as many games. Harkey scored unassisted when she took advantage of an IPFW defensive letdown and drove the ball over McFadden's head. Burton said the shot was created off a restart when Kourtney Price threw in the ball in. In getting the ball in position, Harkey made a quick one-timer to score.

IPFW, which outshot the Cougars 13-9, came back once more as Mason made it 3-3 with a tap-in off a corner kick from Justine LeBlanc at 61:46.

Dailey then put the final touch on the scoring with her second goal of the game.

"We've now had seven different players score the nine goals this season," noted Burton.

SIUE is now idle until Friday when it travels to Macomb for a 5 p.m. game at Western Illinois.
