Cougars Win Overtime Thriller Over Eastern Kentucky

Box Score

EDWARDSVILE, Ill. - On senior day it was a sophomore who was the hero for SIUE women's soccer. Meagan Iffrig's goal with 1:47 to play in the first overtime period Sunday lifted the Cougars to a 1-0 win over Eastern Kentucky at Korte Stadium.

"The girls wanted it and it showed," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "It takes a lot of effort to play on a Sunday and to get it into overtime."

Iffrig's goal came as a result of a throw in. Kristin Dierker tossed the ball into Devon Thomas at the left side of the penalty box. Thomas fed Iffrig who worked the ball to her left foot before striking a left-footed shot to the back post from 18 yards away. The goal is the third of the year for Iffrig, and her second game-winner of the season.

"We kept the ball in their end, we had some pressure, and a throw in resulted from that pressure," Burton said. "That's how we scored the goal."

SIUE improved to 5-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Eastern Kentucky dropped to 6-8-2 and 4-2-1 in the OVC.

"Anytime you can get conference wins you will take it," Burton said.

Eastern Kentucky seemed to dominate the offensive chances for most of the game. The Colonels outshot the Cougars 15-5 over the first 90 minutes. SIUE goalkeepers Claire Lovercheck and Courtney Vonder Haar proved up to the task, making four saves apiece.

Lovercheck started the game for the Cougars but left after a collision early in the first half. Lovercheck made two point blank saves, after the collision but left the game in the 16th minute. Vonder Haar earned her second win in goal playing 82:34.

Sunday was the final home game for six Cougar seniors. Lovercheck, Thomas, Kiara Akpore, Brittany Bodziak, Kaci Harkey, and Rachel Brcic all played their final home games for SIUE. Burton said to get the win on senior day was special.

"In short, they are a fantastic group," Burton said of the six seniors. "I can't say enough about them as people and on top of it they are great soccer players."

The Cougars next travel to Austin Peay Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
