Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Sisters Natalia and Tatiana Ariza provided
the offense Friday night as host Austin Peay downed visiting SIUE
2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer.
SIUE fell to 5-8-1 overall and 3-4 in the OVC. Austin Peay
improved to 8-6-1 and 2-3-1 in conference play.
"They had more shots today," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said.
"But in terms of quality chances, we had just as many as they
did."
Natalia Ariza put the Lady Govs on the board in the 27th minute.
A 50-50 ball in the air came right to Ariza's foot. The forward
one-touched it towards the net. The shot would have gone wide of
the goal had it not been deflected off an SIUE defender's back.
"It was unfortunate for us. Courtney (Vonder Haar) had no
chance," Burton said. "(Ariza) struck it well."
Burton admitted that one of the Cougars' goals coming into the
game was to score first.
"Up to the first goal we were really dominating," Burton said.
"Once you go one goal down you're chasing the game the rest of the
way."
Tatiana Ariza made it 2-0 in the 83rd minute when she converted
on a penalty kick.
Vonder Haar, who played her first complete game of her SIUE
career, made six saves in the loss.
"Courtney played well," Burton said of his freshman goalkeeper.
"She was solid. She made a couple of unbelievable saves and was
communicating well with our backs."
The Cougars next travel to Murray State for a Sunday afternoon
game. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
