MOREHEAD, Ky. - Ohio Valley Conference leader Morehead State pounded out 33 kills Saturday and defeated SIUE volleyball 25-10, 25-18, 25-17 at Wetherby Gym.
Morehead State improved to 19-6 overall and 14-1 in the OVC. The Cougars fell to 10-18 overall and 5-11 in OVC play.
"They are by far the best in the conference in my opinion," said SIUE Head Coach Leah Johnson.
The Cougars were held to 24 kills, including a team-leading eight by Julia Whitfield. Kelsey Augustine added six kills and two blocks.
Johnson said the Cougars played well in sets two and three but didn't have the needed rhythm against the Eagles.
"We played good volleyball. They had to work for every point," she added. "We challenged them. They just made fewer errors."
Morehead State's Aryn Bohannon was the match's leading hitter with 11 kills as the Eagles hit .242 for the match. Morehead State also finished with 10 blocks, including five from Emma Keough.
Johnson said Morehead State had to work for their points as they needed 57 digs to hold off the Cougars.
"Each person managed their position well for us. They didn't have any easy points," Johnson said.
SIUE now returns home as three out of its last four contests are at the Vadalabene Center. It begins next Friday with Jacksonville State in a 7 p.m. matchup.
