Cougars Fall in Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score

EDWARDSILLE, Ill. - Shelby Stewart's header with two seconds left in the first overtime period made winners out of the Missouri State Bears Sunday. Stewart's goal gave Missouri State the 3-2 win over SIUE in women's soccer at Korte Stadium.

SIUE falls to 3-7-1 with the loss. Missouri State improves to 10-3-1.

"It's heartbreaking anytime you lose in overtime, but to lose as the clock's winding down, before you can re-organize and go again for the last 10 minutes, that hurts for sure," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said.

The Cougars were close to ending the game in their favor early in overtime, when Michelle Auer played a perfect cross in front of the goal with five minutes to play in the period. Meagan Iffrig got high in the air to get her head on the cross and it looked like it was going in at the back post. Bears' goalkeeper Jessica Teahan made a full diving save to deny the chance.

"We got a couple today and could have had a few more if not for their goalkeeper-she made an unbelievable save in that overtime," Burton said. "It could have been the end of the game."

Rachel Brcic got the Cougars on the board early, ending a three-match scoring drought for SIUE. She netted her second goal of the season in the 24th minute, thanks to a corner kick. Brcic, who had just entered the game, collected a loose ball in front of the goal and was able to touch it past Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan for the 1-0 lead.

The Bears wasted little time in evening the score, tying the game just 2:05 later. Bethany Smith took a pass over the top from Tara Bailes and then headed it over SIUE goalkeeper Courtney VonderHaar, who was charging out of the goal. Smith collected her second of the game in the 31st minute on a free kick from the top of the box to make it 2-1 Missouri State at half.

VonderHaar made two saves in the first half for the Cougars.

A defensive lapse by the Bears tied the score for SIUE. An own goal just two minutes into the second half by Missouri State made it 2-2. It stayed that way until overtime.

Claire Lovercheck replaced VonderHaar in the second half for SIUE and came up big late in the game. Missouri State's Christine Cross got a chance in close to goal and hit a hard shot to the goalkeeper's right. Lovercheck was able to able to make a quick diving save. The save was one of two for Lovercheck in the game.

"That's definitely a strong part of both of our keepers is in close and making reactionary saves," Burton said. "She did a great job on that and hung tough with it."

The Cougars return to Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend, hosting Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.

"We have two tough teams coming in," Burton said. "It will be another two tough tests."
