ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis scored five runs in the seventh inning Wednesday as part of an 11-0 shutout of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in baseball action at the Billiken Sports Center on the SLU campus.
The Billikens, 5-2, banged out 15 hits against seven Cougar pitchers. SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said it wasn't in the plans to use that many arms.
"We certainly didn't plan it that way," Collins said. "When we got down it seemed like the thing to do."
Josh Malin (0-1) started and suffered the loss for the Cougars. Malin allowed four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.
Dustin Quattrocchi pitched a scoreless inning in relief, allowing a single hit. Josh Hoguet, Jake Stauffenberg, Tony Schaeffer, Ryan Daniels and Brian Lorenz each pitched less than an inning.
"We did want to get those guys some work," Collins added.
The Cougars, 1-6, managed just six hits during the loss. No Cougar player had more than a single hit.
SLU starter Zach Smith (1-0) tossed seven shutout innings, allowing five Cougar hits.
"He made pitches when he had to," Collins said of the Billikens' starter.
Travis Parker paced the Billikens offensively. Parker was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Connor Gandossy also drove in two runs for SLU.
SIUE travels next to Ft. Myers, Fla for a weekend tournament at Bethune-Cookman. The Cougars will face Michigan State Friday afternoon to open the tournament. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. E.T.
SIUE will face the Spartans again on Saturday as well as Boston College. The Cougars wrap up the tournament with host Bethune-Cookman Sunday.
