Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Amanda Miller held
on for a three-set victory at No. 6 singles to give the Southern
Illinois University Edwardsville women's tennis team a 4-3 victory
over UMKC Sunday night at the Edwardsville YMCA.
The win improved the Cougars to 5-6 overall and was the third
win in their last four matches. UMKC fell to 6-11 with the
loss.
"We knew going into the match that UMKC was going to be evenly
matched competition," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "The
fact that we found a way to get the win shows some growth amongst
our team."
SIUE claimed the doubles point by winning the bottom two spots
to jump in front 1-0. Laura Horning and
Ali Wulfers defeated UMKC's Jillian Yakominich and Gabriela Pintos
8-3 at the No. 3 position before Maggie Boeckman and Rachel Webb won for
the fifth time in their last seven matches at No. 2 doubles. The
duo won a 9-7 decision over the Kangaroos' Laura Bouet and Suzan
Lisenby.
"The play of Rachel and Maggie continues to get stronger and
stronger each match," added Coomer. "We have a lot of confidence in
our doubles teams."
The early doubles point proved pivotal as the teams split the
six singles matches. Horning claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win over Chelsea
Horner at No. 3 singles while Webb won 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot
over UMKC's Lisenby.
With the match hanging in the balance, the Cougars' Miller and
Pintos of the Kangaroos split the first two sets at No. 6 singles.
Miller took control in the third set winning 6-4 to not only win
her match but also clinch the team victory for SIUE.
"We are starting to see glimpses of what the future holds
winning three of our last four matches," said Coomer. "We have been
playing strong of late and look to continue that."
The Cougars now head to Kentucky for matches at Eastern Kentucky
April 1 and Morehead State April 2.
