NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Tennessee State batted to a doubleheader split Friday in two varying games.
SIUE, now 23-23 and 15-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference, overpowered the Tigers in game one 11-0 in five innings. Tennessee State, 11-40 overall and 5-21 in the OVC, used 10 innings and the international tiebreaker rule to upend the Cougars 6-5 in the nightcap.
The two teams play one final game Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Cougars were strong in the opening game as Erika Taylor tossed her fifth shutout of the season in a short game called by the eight-run rule. Taylor fanned seven and walked one. She allowed three hits.
SIUE's offense hit TSU starter Olivia Gamache for 12 hits. Chelsea Yankolovich, Lindsey Barron, Taylor Tooley and Whitney Davis each had two hits for SIUE.
SIUE took advantage of four Tennessee State errors in the game. Tooley's three-run homer in the fifth put the Cougars into double digits in runs for the third time this season.
"Taylor had a good day. She had the best day of anyone," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.
In the nightcap, SIUE left eight runners on base in the 10-inning game. Montgomery said the Cougars put themselves in an unnecessary position.
"We've got to pitch better and capitalize on our opportunities to score," said Montgomery. "We allowed them to stay in the game by not getting the job done."
SIUE took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lindsey Barron and Laurie Siebert started the rally with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice fly by Tooley, the Cougars used an outfield error by TSU and a single by Brianna Fulginiti to score their runs.
TSU's Kelly Troglin went the distance for the Tigers to gain her third victory of the season. SIUE fielded three pitchers starting with Ali Downing. Lindsey Coleman took the Cougars into extra innings, and Taylor ended up with the loss in extra innings.
The Tigers would tie the score 4-4 in the fifth as Jalisa Bradley sent a double to left field, scoring Tedra Alford.
With the two teams continued to be even through nine frames, the game went to the international tiebreaker rule in the 10th. SIUE would score first. Barron began the inning on second base. Tooley would single her home for SIUE's run.
Tennessee State battled back in the bottom half of the 10th. Alford singled home Shanika Johnson from second to tie the score again 5-5. After a passed ball and an infield out, Brittany Webb singled home Alford for the game winner.
