TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Spencer Patton took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Thursday when Indiana State's Jon Hedges homered to start the inning. The Sycamores would go on to edge the Cougars 3-0 in college baseball at Bob Warn Field. The loss snaps SIUE's season-long winning streak at seven games.
Hedges homer came on the first pitch of the inning by Patton. Tyler Wampler followed with a single to right field to chase the right-hander. Thad Hawkins relieved Patton and retired the first two hitters he faced. Wampler advanced to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a fly out. Hawkins issued a two-out walk to Lucas Hileman, who then stole second. Koby Kraemer plated both runners with a double down the left field line.
Kraemer was 1 for 4 with the two RBIs. Hedges was 1 for 3.
Patton allowed the two runs on just two hits. He struck out eight and walked two. He dropped to 5-3 with the loss.
SIUE, 18-20, managed just seven hits against Sycamore starter Jason Van Skike and two relievers. Zach Hawkins was 3 for 4. Mitch Matecki was 2 for 4. Joel Greatting and Brett Keeler had the other hits for the Cougars.
Van Skike allowed four hits over seven innings and struck out eight. He did not figure into the decision. Reggie Hochstedler, 3-1, earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just a single hit. He struck out two. Blake Drake allowed two hits over the final 2/3 of an inning to pick up his sixth save.
The Cougars next travel to Jacksonville State for a three-game weekend series with Jacksonville State of the Ohio Valley Conference. The two teams will play a double header Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
