CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - There was no movement in the Ohio Valley Conference standings for many of the teams who will be playing for an NCAA Tournament bid in next week's league championships.
SIUE (18-11 in league play), like UT Martin (18-10) and Southeast Missouri (17-11), split doubleheaders today. Jacksonville State also split its doubleheader with Murray State and gained the second seed. Eastern Illinois is next week's host for the six-team OVC Tournament.
SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said the Cougars can't afford to scoreboard watch Sunday. "We have to worry about ourselves," she said.
Sunday's regular season finale is set for 1 p.m.
The Cougars got off to a great start in its doubleheader Saturday at Austin Peay. Despite a 95-minute delay because of rain, the Cougars smacked 10 hits in game one, including three from Chelsea Yankolovich and two each from Lindsey Barron, Kayla Riggs, and Kasey Schlafke.
Schlafke would hit her seventh home run of the season as a leadoff homer in the third inning. SIUE tallied runs in each of the first four innings.
Erika Taylor earned the win became the ninth player in school history to record 20 or more victories in a season. The Cougar right-hander fanned 10 batters Saturday and increased her season total to 247, which is the third most in a season.
"She was throwing very hard in the first game today," noted Montgomery.
Taylor also needs just four more strikeouts to become SIUE's all-time leader in that career statistical category. She trails only former teammate Kaitlin Colosimo who struck out 715 batters from 2006 to 2009.
SIUE, now 27-28 overall, garnered five hits in the nightcap. Riggs, who played first base in both games for the Cougars, recorded back-to-back multiple hit games and finished the day 4 for 7.
"She had a very good day offensively," Montgomery said.
Jessica Ryan provided the big bat in game two for the Governors, 12-39 overall and 7-22 in league play. She drove in three runs behind a pair of home runs.
The Cougars stranded seven in the nightcap. Ali Downing took the loss for SIUE and is now 2-10. Morgan Brewer was the winning pitcher and improved to 8-17.
