BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford defeated SIUE 5-2 Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game baseball series at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium. The Bulldogs won the final two games of the series to win the series.
For the second consecutive day, Samford got off to a quick start. The Bulldogs, 28-19, took advantage of three walks in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Samford extended its lead to 3-0 with single runs in the second and third innings. Saxon Butler extended the Bulldogs' lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning with a two-run home run off of Cougars' starter Jake Stauffenberg.
Butler was 1 for 4 with the home run and two RBIs.
Stauffenberg, 0-1, allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits over four innings. He struck out two. Ryan Daniels, Dustin Quattrocchi and Spencer Patton combined for four innings of scoreless relief.
Chase Green accounted for the only Cougar runs with a two-run single in the eighth inning to make it 5-2. Green finished the day 2 for 4 with the two RBIs. Mitch Matecki and Joel Greatting scored on the double. Matecki had doubled. Greatting was hit by a pitch.
SIUE outhit Samford 11-7, but stranded 11 runners on the basepaths. Mike Swinnen was 3 for 4 for the Cougars. Matecki was 2 for 5.
Josh Martin, 4-1, tossed six shutout innings for the win for Samford.
The Cougars will host Indiana State Tuesday at SimmonsCooper Complex. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
