Cougars Fall on the Road at UT Martin

Box Score

MARTIN, Tenn. - A pair of goals on each side of halftime lifted UT Martin to a 2-0 win over visiting SIUE in women's soccer Friday afternoon.

"Give credit to UT Martin they played really well," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We weren't good enough to beat them today."

SIUE fell to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks improved to 7-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the OVC.

Camilla Buoni scored her second goal of the season with just over two minutes to play in the first half to put UT Martin up 1-0. Buoni collected a loose ball just a few yards away from goal then beat SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck for the eventual game-winner.

"We were kind of unlucky I guess on the first goal," Burton said. "We won the tackle, and the ball just kind of squirted right back to her."

Alyssa Curtis scored the second goal of the game for the Skyhawks when she got her head on a corner kick from Hannah McGowen in the 56th minute.

The Cougars and Skyhawks finished with 17 shots apiece. Burton believes the Cougars had some good opportunities from those shots.

"Of the 17 shots, we probably had 7-8 really good chances," Burton said. "We were creating the chances we just didn't finish."

Lovercheck finished with two saves. UT Martin goalkeeper made nine saves in the shutout.

SIUE will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., Sunday for a 1 p.m. match with SEMO.

"We'll try to build on today and bounce back to play a strong team Sunday," Burton said.
