Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Freshman Cassidy Sherman headed home the game-winning goal Friday night, giving SIUE women's soccer a 1-0 victory over Murray State at Korte Stadium. It is the third consecutive 1-0 victory for the Cougars and their seventh shutout of the season.
"It's nice any time to get a shutout and three wins in a row in conference," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said.
SIUE improved to 7-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Murray State dropped to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the OVC.
Sherman's goal came in the 35th minute off a restart by Kourtney Price. Price served a high curling ball from 40 yards out near the right sideline. Sherman made a perfect run to connect with the winning strike.
"We've been really close on a lot of similar restarts throughout the season," Burton added. "We've been working on it continuously."
SIUE controlled possession for the majority of the night. The Cougars finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots.
SIUE finishes the home portion of its regular season schedule with a 1 p.m. game Sunday against Austin Peay. The Cougars will honor six seniors prior to the game.
"(Austin Peay) is a really good, talented team," Burton said. "We're looking forward to a challenge for sure. We can make it a really good four-game home stand if we can finish off with another win. That's what we're going to try to do on Sunday."
