Cougars Draw on Senior Day

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE and APSU played 110 minutes of soccer Sunday afternoon, and neither team could find the back of the net. The Cougars and Lady Govs played to a scoreless draw in double overtime.

"You pick up points in conference and that is ultimately a positive," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "Do I feel like we had chances to win the game? Yes we did."

SIUE is now 7-5-2 and 4-2-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Austin Peay is 7-7-1 and 3-2-1 in the OVC. The Cougars are undefeated in four consecutive games (3-0-1) and have not allowed a goal in that span.

SIUE outshot APSU 20-10 by game's end, but the Lady Govs held a 4-2 advantage in shots in the final overtime period.

"Austin Peay had chances in overtime where Jennifer Pelley came up huge," Burton said. "She had a couple of really good saves."

For the second week in a row SIUE held one of the Ohio Valley Conference's best offensive teams off the scoreboard.

"Team-wise we did well to limit too many chances in the run of play against a very good attacking team with a lot of high-quality attacking personalities," Burton said.

The Cougars finished the home portion of their regular season with a 7-1-1 record.

"It is something the girls made as one of their team goals this year -- playing well at home," Burton said.

Sunday represented the final regular season home game for six Cougar seniors. Alexandria Brazill, Kristen Dailey, Kristin Dierker, Jenny Humphrey, Shanna Hutchison, and Jennifer Tucker were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

"These girls brought a lot to our program. (They brought) a lot of personality and a lot of talent," Burton said. "We'll miss them for sure, but we still have a lot of soccer left."

SIUE now finishes the regular season with three consecutive road games beginning with a game at Eastern Kentucky Friday afternoon.

"That's the challenge," Burton said. "Can we bring the same intensity and execution to the road? I think we can."
