Box Score MARTIN, Tenn. - Joceline Quiceno's goal with just more than five minutes remaining in regulation lifted Austin Peay to a 1-0 victory over SIUE in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer tournament.
"I could not be prouder of the way we competed from the freshman through our seniors," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "The girls put everything on the line just as they were asked to and just as they did last night."
The sixth-seeded Cougars fell to 7-8-4 with the loss. Austin Peay, the No. 2 seed, improved to 12-7-1 and will face top-seeded UT Martin Sunday for the OVC Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
"The game itself was a really well-fought and well-battled game," Burton added. "Give Austin Peay credit. They were the No. 2 seed for a reason. We gave them everything they could handle."
Quiceno's goal came from off a pass from OVC Offensive Player of the Year Tatiana Ariza. Quiceno was able to connect with a point-blank shot past SIUE goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley. Pelley finished with four saves.
The Cougars outshot the Lady Govs 13-11, including holding an 8-5 edge after the first 45 minutes. Austin Peay goalkeeper Haylee Shoaff made six saves.
"We played well and created some chances," Burton said. "We just lacked that finishing touch, which has been our Achilles heel all season."
Burton said while there is pain in the loss ultimately the team should be proud of their accomplishments.
"We walked off that field with zero regrets," Burton said. "You gain character through experience, and what a learning experience this has been for us. Our returners will be able to take a lot from this and build from it."
