EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – South Dakota State pitcher Stephen Bougher fired a complete-game three-hitter Friday night as the Jack Rabbits shut out SIUE baseball 5-0 in the first of a four-game series at Simmons Baseball Complex.

"Bougher really carved us up," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "I just hope they don't pitch him tomorrow."

SIUE (8-9) managed just three hits against Bougher, who struck out six on his way to his second complete-game shutout of the year.

James Vazquez had two hits for the Cougars and finished 2 for 4. Brian Sipe had the other hit. Sipe was 1 for 3.

SDSU (3-9-1) took a 1-0 lead thanks to two hits a walk in the first inning against SIUE starter Ryan Daniels (1-4). Daniels allowed back-to-back hits to start the fifth inning before leaving the game. He surrendered two runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out one. Tony Schaeffer followed Daniels and pitched five innings in relief to finish the game. Schaeffer allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out three.

The Jack Rabbits added two runs in the sixth and another run in the eighth for the final margin.

"The bottom line is when you pitch poorly, and you hit poorly, you almost always lose," Collins said. "That's what we did."

Dan Marra paced SDSU's offense, going 3 for 5. Eric Cain was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

The series continues with a double head Saturday. The two teams will play a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

"We are going to have to show up tomorrow and try it again," Collins said.
