Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Saint Louis used a four-run fifth inning to defeat SIUE 5-1 Wednesday in college baseball at Simmons Baseball Complex.
SIUE (15-18) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Chase Green in the second inning. Joel Greatting doubled to lead off the inning, before Green's two-out single. Green was 1 for 4 with the RBI.
The Billikens (22-10) scored the four fifth inning runs on four hits. Jordan Hammerman drove home two with a one-out triple to the right field corner. Grant Nelson made it 5-1 SLU with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to score Steve Fernandez.
Hammerman was 1 for 3 with the two RBIs. Fernandez was 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.
SIUE managed just four hits and none after the third inning. Greatting, Sipe and Becherer had the other three hits for the Cougars.
"Our offense was stagnant," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "We didn't get a hit after the third inning, and I don't even think we hit a ball hard after the third inning."
Brooks McDowell (1-2) started and took the loss. McDowell allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out two.
"Every game starts with a new pitcher," Collins added. "We need someone to go out there and pitch better and pitch longer."
Tony Schaeffer allowed a run over 2 1/3 innings of relief. He gave up two hits. Luke Ingersoll pitched the final two innings. Ingersoll allowed one hit, walked three, and struck out one.
Saint Louis used seven pitchers in the game, with only the starter, Zack Smith, lasting longer than 1 2/3 innings. Smith allowed the run over 2 2/3 innings. Nick Bates earned the win in relief. He improved to 3-1 with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out one.
SIUE returns to Ohio Valley Conference play with a weekend series at Tennessee Tech Friday through Sunday. First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
