Cougars Down Eagles to Snap Streak

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Three SIUE pitchers limited Morehead State to a run on six hits Thursday night as the Cougars snapped a five game losing streak with a 2-1 win in the second game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series.

"You never want to have any kind of losing streak," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "We just needed that win. We had not been playing all that well."

Brian Lorenz (2-0) pitched three scoreless, hitless innings to earn the win and Dustin Quattrocchi pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the year.

"All three guys pitched well," Collins said. "Lorenz was real crisp and 'Q' got it done at the end."

Josh Hoguet allowed a single run over five plus innings in the start. Hoguet allowed five hits, struck out two and walked five.

"We have to stop walking so many. You can't dodge too many bullets," Collins said. "I commend (Josh) for only giving up the one run, but he used up a lot of pitches to get through the five innings. That put a little more on our bullpen. Fortunately Lorenz was up to the task."

SIUE (14-16, 3-5 OVC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Devin Caldwell doubled to start the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Keeler. Keeler finished 1 for 2 with the RBI.

MSU (17-14, 4-4 OVC) used a sacrifice fly from Eric Bainer the top of the third to tie the score. Bainer was 0 for 3 with the RBI.

Lorenz came into the game with runners at first and second, nobody out and the game tied 1-1 in the fifth. A sacrifice bunt and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Lorenz struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.

The Cougars scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Joel Greatting scored on a fielder's choice from Matt Highland.

"We worked hard to get those two runs, they were not easy," Collins added. "It was one more than the other team had so we'll take it."

Morehead State starter Noah Smallwood (2-1) took the loss for the Eagles. Smallwood allowed both runs on five hits. He walked three and did not strike out a batter. Taylor Pickens led the Eagles at the plate. He finished 2 for 5.

Caldwell finished 2 for 3 with the run scored. Travis Becherer was also 2 for 3.

The series concludes with a 1 p.m. start Saturday. Thad Hawkins will make the start for the Cougars.

"We have a good pitcher going tomorrow; I am confident in Thad," Collins said. At least we have a split right now and we can win the series."
