Cougars Complete Preseason Perfect

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Kevin Stoll scored twice and added an assist as SIUE men's soccer collected a 3-0 triumph over Missouri State in both teams' final preseason game.

The Cougars completed the preseason with two shutouts and hope to use that momentum for next weekend's season opener at the Virginia Tech Tournament against Virginia Tech and James Madison.

SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish didn't read too much into Friday's result in front of 2,031 fans at Korte Stadium.

"It doesn't really mean much from a regular season standpoint. We're still 0-0 going into next week. We'll take the positive from it and watch the video. And we still have a lot of work to do," Kalish said.

Stoll, who played in front of a home crowd for the first time since coming to SIUE more than two seasons ago, helped the Cougars get on the scoreboard at 26:21 when he centered the ball directly to the head of fellow senior Brian Groark who would pick up the eventual game-winning goal.

SIUE quickly made it 2-0 on Stoll's first goal of the preseason. He took a short pass from Benny Jeffery on the left side. Stoll took quick aim and buried a shot toward the right side of the net past Missouri State goalkeeper Andrew Riggs.

"This is his third year, but he's had injuries the last two years so we've been waiting for this moment where he can be on the field. He's a very good leader, and he's a very special player," Kalish said of Stoll.

Stoll's final goal of the evening came on a penalty kick at 53:20 after a foul on Missouri State was called in the penalty area during an SIUE corner kick.

SIUE controlled the tempo of the game, mixing in a controlled offense with long runs. The Cougars outshot Missouri State 10-7.

John Berner and Kent Kobernus shared time in goal for the Cougars. Berner played the first 63 minutes and grabbed two saves while Kobernus grabbed one save in 27 minutes.

"Both and John and Kent are very good goalkeepers. John took control the last few weeks. His size and range are key," added Kalish.

The Cougars would outshoot the Bears, a fellow Missouri Valley Conference member, 10-7. The two teams will meet once again at Korte Stadium on October 13 when the game counts in the regular season and in the MVC standings.
