Eagles Upend Volleyball Cougars

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. – SIUE volleyball completed its Ohio Valley Conference road swing Saturday with a four-set loss at Morehead State.

The Eagles, which remained undefeated in six OVC matches so far this season and improved to 15-5 overall, topped the Cougars 25-21, 25-17, 21-15, 25-16.

"It's a positive weekend for the Cougars," said SIUE Head Coach Leah Johnson. "To defeat Eastern Kentucky on the road and play the defending regular season champion and currently undefeated Morehead State relatively competitive, that's a good weekend."

It was the fifth of six road contests to start the OVC season for SIUE. The Cougars, 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the OVC, now return home for a pair of home contests against Murray State and Austin Peay next Friday and Saturday.

Johnson said she believed there will be much for the Cougars to learn from Saturday's match. She's hoping the Cougars will take the experience and turn it into a positive.

"We're still improving at a tremendous rate," Johnson said.

Kelsey Augustine led the SIUE offense in the match against Morehead State. The senior middle hitter finished with 12 kills and three blocks. Kristen Torre added nine kills, three blocks, and a team-leading .421 hitting percentage.

Alex Fitzmorris powered Morehead State with 16 kills. The Eagles completed the match with 60 kills, 30 attack errors, and a .190 hitting percentage. The Cougars hit .118 as a team and had 40 kills.

Johnson credited the Cougars with keeping Morehead State out of system for portions of the match which resulted in Morehead State's numerous attack errors. "They are terminal when they are in system," she added.

Morehead State took advantage of SIUE miscues in set one after the match was tied 21-21. Morehead State setter Leslie Schellhaus served out the set.

The Eagles were looking for the sweep after taking the second set, but some SIUE offensive and defensive adjustments kept the Eagles at bay in the third set.

"We responded well after being down two sets," Johnson said. Torre led the Cougars in set three with five kills, and the team hit .212 during the set.

Seven different players recorded a kill in the fourth set for Morehead State.
