Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Jacksonville State scored five times in the first inning Saturday and then cruised to an 11-0 win over SIUE in the second game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Rudy Abbott Field.
The Gamecocks have won each of the first two games of the series and improved to 10-10 overall and 4-1 in the OVC. SIUE dropped to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in the OVC. The Cougars fell to 1-7 away from home this season.
Sam Hopkins (0-1) suffered the loss for SIUE. Hopkins allowed seven runs, four earned, on five hits. He struck out one and walked three.
"Sam had a hard time repeating his delivery today," SIUE Interim Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "When you're inconsistent with your delivery it's hard to locate."
For the second day in a row, SIUE finished with just four hits and by four different players. James Vazquez, Zach Little, Devin Caldwell, and Travis Becherer each had hits for the Cougars.
"Things haven't been very good at the plate," Stoecklin added. "And it has a snowball effect. We need a couple of guys to step up and say, 'it stops with me.' We haven't had that."
Taylor Shields (4-1) earned the win for JSU. He allowed the four hits over seven innings. He stuck out three.
Griff Gordon led the Gamecocks with two hits and two RBIs. Coty Blanchard had two hits and an RBI. Tyler Gamble had a hit and an RBI. Adam Miller added a solo home run for Jacksonville State.
Jake Stauffenberg and Caleb Wilkerson also each pitched for the Cougars. Stauffenberg allowed four run over 3 2/3 innings. Wilkerson added three scoreless innings. He allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out one.
"I was happy with what Wilkerson did today," Stoecklin said. "He showed some signs of having the ability to win at this level."
The Cougars and Gamecocks will play the series finale Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
"You have to find a way to put this behind you and play with a clear head," Stoecklin said. We'll try and find a way to win this last game."
