Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ala. –SIUE baseball scored six runs on 10 hits Sunday, but Jacksonville State scored three times in the eighth inning to pick up a come-from-behind 7-6 victory and sweep the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series.
The Cougars, now 5-10 overall and 3-3 in the OVC, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases with nobody out on two walks and a hit. Skyler Geissinger hit a sacrifice fly to center that allowed James Vazquez to score the first run of the game. Caleb Wilkerson scored to make it 2-0 when Denton Reed grounded a ball to second base, and it was misplayed.
Jacksonville State, which improved to 11-10 overall and 5-1 in the OVC, scored a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
Geissinger made it 3-1 SIUE with his second RBI of the game in the third inning. He single to left scored Joel Greatting, who also had singled.
Michael Bishop's two-run home run capped a three-run fifth inning that put JSU ahead 4-3. Bishop led JSU with two hits and two RBIs.
SIUE tied the game in the sixth inning. Geissinger led off the inning with a double to left and then scored on an error by JSU third baseman Eddie Mora-Lorea.
Geissinger finished the day 2 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBIs.
"We were better on offense today," SIUE Interim Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "Skyler did a nice job at the plate today. He swung the bat very well.
The Cougars regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning. A two-run home run from Devin Caldwell made it 6-4. Reed scored ahead of Caldwell after reaching with a one-out single. Caldwell also finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
"Devin looked like his old self today," Stoecklin said. "The home run came at a good time."
P.J. Schuster pitched seven strong innings for SIUE, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out three.
"P.J. did a good job today," Stoecklin said. "He gave us a chance to win."
The Gamecocks used back-to-back-to-back hits off of SIUE pitcher Tony Schaeffer to open the eighth inning. A bases loaded walk to Gavin Golsan made it 6-5. Zach Elbirt then drove a ball to left which was misplayed, allowing two more runs to score. Schaeffer fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Travis Stout (1-0) earned the win, tossing 1 1/3 innings of relief.
SIUE travels to Normal, Ill. for a 3 p.m. game Tuesday.
