Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Murray State junior Cameron Finch tossed a no-hitter Friday night en route to a 1-0 win over SIUE in the opener of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Simmons Baseball Complex.
For the second week in a row, SIUE starter Travis Felax went the distance, only to suffer a one-run defeat. He allowed the run on eight hits. He struck out four.
"Travis did another nice job," SIUE Interim Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "He did everything he could to give us the opportunity to win."
Finch used 94 pitches to record the first no-hitter for Murray State since 1986. He walked four and struck out five.
Murray State, now 11-11 overall and 5-2 in the OVC, scored its only run on two hits in the sixth inning. First baseman Mike Kozlowski singled with two outs in the inning, then scored on a double by Dylan Wheeler. Wheeler paced the 'Breds offense, going 2 for 4 with the RBI.
The Cougars, now 5-12 and 3-4, stranded six runners thanks to the four walks, a hit batter, and an error. Stoecklin said his team needs to look at the game realistically.
"A no-hitter and shutout only counts for one win," Stoecklin said. "They didn't win a series tonight."
The two teams will complete the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon Saturday.
"We need to come out tomorrow, play better, and find a way to win," Stoecklin added.
