Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Eastern Kentucky left-hander Shane Grimm tossed his first complete game of the year Sunday, leading the Colonels to a 6-2 win over SIUE in the final game of an Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Simmons Complex.
Grimm limited SIUE to just two solo home runs and struck out 11 hitters to improve to 4-4 while leading EKU to the series sweep.
"He made good pitches," SIUE Interim Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said of Grimm. "I thought we could have done better with runners in scoring position, but he went out there and threw strikes and got the job done."
SIUE, now 9-25 over al and 6-15 in the OVC, left eight runners on base Sunday, including four in scoring position. The Cougars managed just seven total hits. Zach Little hit his first career home run and finished 2 for 4. Devin Caldwell was 1 for 4 while picking up his team-leading ninth homer of the year.
Senior Tony Schaeffer (1-3) suffered the loss for the Cougars. The left-hander was making just his second start of the year, and allowed four runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.
"He did a nice job," Stoecklin said of Schaeffer. "He did just what we expected him to do. He went out, competed and gave us chance to win this ballgame."
Eastern Kentucky (14-23, 10-8) got home runs from Kenny Hostrander, a three-run shot, and Luke Wurzelbacher, a two-run shot. Hostrander was 2 for 4 to lead the Colonels.
With just three OVC series remaining, Stoecklin believes the Cougars are in a tough spot.
"Being swept at home is totally unacceptable and we really haven't put ourselves into a very good position to get into the (OVC) tournament."
SIUE travels to Bradley for a doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.
