Cougars Set for Key OVC Series

Game Notes

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball can't get too far ahead of itself this weekend at Eastern Illinois.

With a three-game sweep over Eastern Illinois, SIUE would be the regular season Ohio Valley Conference champion and the host of next week's OVC Championships. With just one victory, EIU would take on the hosting duties.

"When it comes to these last three games, we're going to do everything we can to win a regular season conference championship," SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said.

The Cougars already have earned a spot in the OVC Championships and now must secure the best seed possible for the league tourney.

"We have to get back at focusing on the task at hand," said Montgomery.

The Cougars and the Panthers enter the series with the two best records in the OVC. SIUE holds the best overall record at 34-11 as well as a 17-5 mark in the OVC. Eastern Illinois holds the OVC's top conference record at 20-3 and is 35-12 overall.

EIU enters the series with the third best team earned run average in the nation at 1.47. SIUE is not that far behind at 1.94 (23rd nationally).

On the offensive side, SIUE has 34 home runs (tied for third best all-time) and a team batting average of .310. Sophomore third baseman Alex McDavid leads the team with a .420 batting average and 10 home runs.

"We have a much better offensive team than we have had in some time. I'm looking forward to seeing our offense against their pitching," Montgomery said.

EIU is batting .280 as a team led by Hannah Cole's .429 batting average.
