EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – For the third time in four seasons, SIUE volleyball and Indiana State needed a fifth set to decide a winner.

Indiana State edged the Cougars in five sets 23-25, 25-21, 25-15, 20-25, 15-12. It was the season opener for both teams at the SIUE Cougar Classic.

"We had control of the outcome of that match," said SIUE Head Coach Leah Johnson.

SIUE had 10 kills in the fifth set to just three for the Sycamores. However, Indiana State took advantage of eight SIUE miscues in the fifth set to collect the win.

"It's a game of errors with Indiana State. Unfortunately, we were on the high side of that," Johnson said.

Kelsey Augustine and Hilary Trevino led the SIUE offense with 13 kills each Friday. Kristen Torre added 10.

"It was great to see Kristen with 10 kills," said Johnson. "We didn't set her enough until late in the match. It was a good boost to our offense to manage to push us to five sets."

SIUE's offense collected 56 kills in the match while Indiana State managed just 45. Morgan Dall and Cassandra Willis led the Sycamores with 13 and 12 kills, respectively.

"I like our offense," Johnson said. "We had 11 more kills than Indiana State. We can be terminal in this offense."

Indiana State recorded 16 blocks, including 10 from Kyla Thomas. Three different players finished with 17 digs each. SIUE's Chelsea Colclasure led all players with 27 digs.
