Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to five games Friday, earning a 1-1 double overtime draw with Loyola at Korte Stadium.
SIUE (4-1-1) struck first as it had in its previous three games. Cassidy Sherman headed home a cross from Sarah Doggendorf in the 38th minute to put the Cougars on top 1-0. Chelsea Smith also assisted on the goal. It was Sherman's third goal of the year.
The Cougars took the 1-0 lead into half, but wasn't able to close it out.
"We're not going to be able to win every game 1-0," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We couldn't put the game away in the second half."
Alex Gage netted the equalizer for Loyola (1-3-3) in the 67th minute. After taking a pass from Valerie Gonyo, Gage slid a shot to the far post past SIUE goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley. Pelley made three saves for SIUE.
The Cougars outshot the Ramblers 17-6 for the game, including a 13-2 in the second half and overtime.
"We picked up our play, we picked up our tempo," Burton said. "As the game wore on we definitely got better. We couldn't put the final ball in the back of the net."
SIUE remains home for a 1 p.m. matchup with Missouri State .
"Missouri State is always a tough battle," Burton added. "They are always a well-organized team. We'll look to bounce back and get back on the winning side."
