Box Score CONWAY, Ark. – Jabari Danzy scored twice and Garet Christianson added a goal to lead SIUE men's soccer to its third consecutive win Saturday, as the Cougars defeated Central Arkansas 3-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The win moved SIUE to a perfect 3-0 in MVC and 3-6-2 overall. Two of the Cougars three MVC wins have come on the road. SIUE has outscored conference opponents 7-1 through three games.
The Bears fell to 2-8-0 overall and 0-3 in Conference play.
"We did well in the second half to manufacture a few goals and take advantage of our opportunities," SIUE Co-Head Coach David Korn said.
Despite outshooting Central Arkansas 7-1 in the first 45 minute, the Bears' defense didn't surrender and the game was scoreless at halftime.
'When it didn't come in the first half we were patient," Korn added. "We took our chances well in the second half."
Danzy registered his first goal of the year in the 60th minute. Matt Polster flicked a ball to the far post where Danzy was able to head it home from just outside the six-yard box.
Garet Christianson netted his second goal of the year in the 73rd minute. Travis Hoguet played Christianson through. The junior striker beat UCA goalkeeper Harrison Veith to the ball then slotted it home to make it 2-0.
Central Arkansas got on the board in the 83rd minute. SIUE was whistled for a foul in the box and the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. SIUE goalkeeper Kent Kobernus made the save on Logan Miller's penalty, but Alejandro Moquete was able to tap in the rebound from five yards out to make it 2-1.
For the game, Kobernus made two saves in the win. Veith made three saves for Central Arkansas.
Danzy scored his second of the day in the 83rd minute on a similar play to his first goal. This time it was Lewis Ellis who delivered the cross. Danzy headed it home for the final 3-1 margin.
"Jabari has been training well over the past couple of weeks," Korn said of Danzy. "This definitely translated into his performance today."
SIUE returns home for a 7 p.m. matchup with Drake next Saturday night at Korte Stadium.
"UCA is a well-coached and organized team," Korn said. "We learned some things about our team this afternoon and we will be working to improve in training before our next game."
